The artists are compiled from two main sources in Spotify's API:
The initial list is then filtered based on genre and popularity criteria, but you will still see unknown/different genre artists because Spotify's subgenres can get weird sometimes. For example, in order to get some of my favorite artists to show up, I had to add escape room to the list of genres to be queried, but that opened a can of worms of various artists who weren't quite hip hop related.
From the final list, two are randomly matched up, and the user decides who wins. If they need help choosing or just want to discover new music, each artists' top 3 tracks (based on Spotify's US market) are embedded to be previewed.
With all the collective data, the ranking tab lists the artists by wins/losses and win rate, while the visualize tab has a fancy dashboard.
